Ensemble Resonanz / Leila Josefowicz / Claire Chase

Wed, Jan 22, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Claire Chase (Flute), Petteri Pitko (Harpsichord), Leila Josefowicz (Violin)
»Man is only completely a man when he plays.« Friedrich Schiller already understood it, and Ensemble Resonanz and Leila Josefowicz provide the proof: they light-footedly dismantle their world, reassemble it and take their audience on a boundless adventure of discovery. The Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall turns into a playground of creativity: from Leoš Janáček to Pauline Oliveros, they arrange a diverse musical collage, unhinge Bach, pile up the building blocks of life with Felix Mendelssohn and awaken the homo ludens in the audience. A new work by the playful Dai Fujikura lets the soloists soar like birds in spirals over the musical playing field, while the orchestra also picks up momentum. A concert becomes a thrilling carousel ride!

Ensemble Resonanz / Asya Fateyeva / Leopold Hurt

Tue, Mar 4, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Asya Fateyeva (Saxophon), Leopold Hurt (Conductor)
An open archive as philosophy and practice. Where material and resources are open to all, boundaries become new horizons – and scores become white canvases: Asya Fateyeva and Ensemble Resonanz explore creative ways of transformation with works by Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach, Luciano Berio and others. The saxophone, a bold pioneer in the classical repertoire, explores the boundaries of the familiar and invites you to an evening full of surprising twists, transformations and new interpretations: Franz Schubert’s »Arpeggione Sonata« in a double arrangement by Luciano Berio offers a glimpse into his own work in progress, as do collectively developed versions from the Kronos Quartet’s »50 for the future« collection. Only one remains untouched: Bach’s »Air«, in which the original can once again be considered the new.

Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek

Thu, Mar 13, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Derya Yıldırım (Bağlama), Derya Yıldırım (Vocals), Graham Mushnik (Organ), Graham Mushnik (Synthesizer), Antonin Voyant (Guitar), Antonin Voyant (Bass guitar), Antonin Voyant (Flute), Helen Wells (Drums), Ensemble Resonanz
Derya Yıldırım and her international band continue their psychedelic journey, meandering through Anatolian folk music and poetry with their electrifying grooves, while also delving into their own lives and personal experiences. New interpretations of Turkish classics and the band’s original compositions are seamlessly tied together by inventive arrangements and spellbinding grooves, transcending time as past and present collide in the space of one song. While rooted in Anatolian tradition, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek draw on a boundless cosmos of sounds and builds on the contribution of each band member. Born in 2014, and with 3 albums and one EP under their belt, the group has forged a formidable reputation with their heady mix of Anatolian folk, 1970s Turkish psychedelia, pop and jazz. For their performance at the Elbphilharmonie, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek present a special programme featuring a string of new compositions. Their fans will discover these songs on their fourth LP, recorded in the USA in 2024 and due to be released in spring 2025. Special guests and surprises are to be expected, as the group has multiplied their connections over the years and expanded their visions of musical arrangements and stage production. Yıldırım grew up in the multicultural neighborhood of Veddel, where she was influenced by the culture and music of neighboring communities as well as that of her family, learning the bağlama alongside piano, saxophone and guitar. Despite being multilingual, Yıldırım exclusively sings in Turkish: »It’s really important to me because that’s the language I can really express myself in – it’s my emotional language«, she explains. Graham Mushnik (organ, synthesizers) and Antonin Voyant (guitar, bass, and flute) are both members of London/France-based collective Catapulte Records and have played in l’Orchestre du Montplaisant, a quartet known for its cinematic, retro atmospheres. Capetonian drummer Helen Wells has introduced her own style from the South African DIY and psychedelic scenes into the live set since 2022.

Ensemble Resonanz / Nils Mönkemeyer / William Youn / Riccardo Minasi

Tue, May 6, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Nils Mönkemeyer (Viola), William Youn (Piano), Riccardo Minasi (Conductor)
»This Mozart is rock ’n’ roll«, said the NDR about the recording of the last three Mozart symphonies by Ensemble Resonanz under its Principal Guest Conductor Riccardo Minasi. Symphony No. 35 »Haffner« is now on the programme with this level of energy. In addition, Nils Mönkemeyer on the viola and William Youn on the piano explore fragments from Mozart’s pen. The programme ends with Mozart’s symphony in all its elegance, preceded by his thoughts in the form of sketches and fragments, arranged by Isabel Mundry: melodies to whistle along to, a charming minuet, a presto with verve and a rapturous gesture. The casual overture by his contemporary Marianna von Martines invites us into the salon of the 18th century, while in a new chamber concerto Manfred Trojahn distils the muted sound of gardens that have become silent.

Stations: Rihm & Stockhausen

Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 20:00
Bunker Feldstraße, resonanzraum St. Pauli (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Jeroen Berwaerts (Trumpet), Adrian Heger (Piano), Per Rundberg (Piano), Michael Pattmann (Percussion)
Rihm and Stockhausen’s first meeting took place in the summer of 1972. Stockhausen, 24 years his senior, had already seen a lot of talented young people, but was quite taken with Wolfgang Rihm and his youthful self-confidence when he applied for his composition class at the age of barely twenty. And so Rihm, who had been taking professional composition lessons for a long time, regularly travelled from his new home in Cologne to Kürten, 25 km away, where the master held his classes. He would later say that this time was a time of self-discovery and self-examination as a composer.

Ensemble Resonanz / Abel Selaocoe / Saerom Park

Wed, Jun 11, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Abel Selaocoe (Cello), Abel Selaocoe (Vocals), Saerom Park (Cello)
South African cellist Abel Selaocoe redefines the parameters of the cello and combines virtuoso skills with improvisation, singing and body percussion. He has found an ideal ally in Ensemble Resonanz, which also enthusiastically explores innovative and new paths in its concerts, sometimes as the Ensemble in Residence of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and sometimes in the chamber music club it founded itself in the Hamburg district of St Pauli. Together they move through worlds, genres and eras – until they arrive together in the future. In »Silent Woods« by Antonín Dvořák, the leaves rustle in the wind with four celli. »When We Were Trees« by Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima takes us through the seasons in a true sound adventure with a mix of different styles – sometimes classical, sometimes folkloristic, sometimes percussive, sometimes meditative. Kate Moore contributes a new composition for cello and Selaocoe’s voice.

Sun, Jun 15, 2025, 16:00
Abel Selaocoe (Cello), Abel Selaocoe (Stimme), Sidiki Dembélé (Percussion), Saerom Park (Cello), Ensemble Resonanz (Ensemble)
